_________________________________________________________ 12/21/2000 From: "Julia Reidy" Hi Mom, I have signed up for the Breast Cancer 3 Day walk. I will need to raise $2000 and it will be 60 miles of walking in May. I have listed your name as my "in case of emergency" contact and you will get some info in the mail about it. Tell Dad that if he wants, I would really appreciate his help in training for this. It will be like 3 marathons in a row, only I will be walking them instead of running. *Whew* Should be good training for doing the AT some day. See you Sunday morning. Love, Julia

Hi Ethan, Thank you so much for your interest in donating to the Breast Cancer walk. I need to raise at least $1900 by April, which will certainly be a challenge. But it is a cause I greatly believe in. Over 1 million women in America have undetected breast cancer, and the best hope for breast cancer survival is early detection. My grandmother died from breast cancer. It was so sad, because she was too shy to tell her doctor about it when the growth first started. Your donation will go for * info about the importance of early detection * mammograms and clinical breast exams * financial assistance for biopsies * support for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer * medical research I appreciate your support. Send me your address and I will pop a donation form in the mail. This weekend will be 14 miles of hiking, two 7 mile hikes, and Travis with his dogs will do the first 4 miles with me. Each week, I will add another mile to the hikes until I reach the 20 mile/day. My Mom and Dad are being super supportive, and it is so nice to have people coming up to me asking for pledge forms before I have even started my serious campaigning for donations. It feels so good to do something that at first seems impossible, a larger goal than anything I have ever done before. Still, the slogan for this is "I'M possible dreams". It is a challenge which inspires me. Thanks again, j

____________________________________________________ 1/22/2001 Way to go Julia! We runners can be pretty maniacal about things but the foundation for what we do is in a shared belief that aerobic exercise is king for many reasons. So whether you walk ,run, jog or sprint you're part of the team and equally an inspiration to all of us..... As for blisters, sweat, combined with cotton socks is a serious recipe for pain.. Find yourself a good pair of running socks that contains some form of moisture wicking material. The brand name you'll often see is Coolmax. I've found that while blisters may not be totally eliminated by the use of moisture wicking socks they definitely decrease the frequency and rate. You should be able to find these socks at any athletic retailer that sells exercise footwear. And above all, make sure your wearing appropriate footwear for your activity. As for training recommendations, Rawson is THE KING on that hallowed ground so I'll let him do the coaching.... All the best. Tom Foley, A Team __________________________________________________ 1/22/2001 I wanted to wish you good luck at the Avon 3 day. Cancer research is such a worthy cause. I did Koman's race for the cure and I am running to support the lukemia/lymphoma foundation in February. Good luck- Melissa Lemkin, A Team ________________________________________________ 1/23/2001 >Ms. Reidy: > >Thanks for your order of trail maps. Of course you can link to mine, and I'd like to link to yours as well if you don't mind. This was my first website and looking at yours gave me a lot of ideas. I hope that more people put up sites so that we can link them all together and draw inspiration from each other! I think I'd like to try that Bay Circuit trail, I'll have to read more about it. Thanks so much and please let me know if it's okay to link to your site. -Deborah Santoro artem6@aol.com ________________________________________________________ 12/24/2001 It's ALL good news! a.. Emerson Hospital will be our medical sponsor again for this year's 3-Day. b.. Day Zero and Opening Ceremonies will take place at the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Fitchburg, MA. This is a wonderful indoor site, the same as last year. c.. Closing Ceremonies ... (DRUMROLL) ... will take place on Boston Common. This is huge news. We are thrilled. Optional hotel and shuttle information for Day Zero will be sent out in a Travel & Lodging Planner in the next few weeks. "PHENOMENAL WOMAN": Tune your TV to "Primetime Thursday" this Thursday, January 25. Diane Sawyer will interview Jerri Nielsen, the doctor who discovered she had breast cancer while working at the South Pole in 1999. Secluded at a polar station, Nielsen performed a needle biopsy on her own breast and administered her own chemotherapy. An article on Nielsen appears in this month's "O" magazine, Oprah's magazine. ~ Jess, Walker Coach _________________________________________________________ 1/25/2001 I donated online to your walk - hope it helps!
